Literary analysis:
Characters and plot: Gia Kearns ( main character) and her best friends Afton, and Nick live in Boston, Massachusetts. One rainy day they decide to visit the most prestigious library in Massachusetts, The Athenaeum ( pages 3-14). While enjoying the magnificent magnitude of the library Gia and Afton decide to pick out some books and sit in one of the reading nooks, where they see an attractive guy wearing a black leather jacket. Gia and the mysterious boy exchange glances for a bit before out of nowhere the boy disappears into thin air ( pages 9-10). Gia and her friends investigate and magically whisked away to a far away library with no knowledge of how they came to be there. Gia is forced to embrace her family's past and embark on a new journey to save two worlds.
Important themes & symbols: One of the themes of this book is courage. Gia shows this in a lot of ways, once when she is forced into this new world of mystic "fairy tales" and is supposed to embrace it as her own heritage ( page 88- ). When she starts training to be a Sentinel and starts learning magic (page 124-136, 166-167), and of course during the battle against the evil high wizard of the French haven, Conemor( pages 345-362). An important symbol of this book is the crescent moon shaped scar on Gia's chest ( page 31), at the beginning of the book it's explained that Gia's mother accidentally cut her and it just happened to leave a scar but when they meet Arik and the other sentinels they tell her it's a shielding charm designed to hide her from enemy eyes. This plays a key role in the story as Gia is able to jump from library to library with out being tracked because of it.
